Irina Popova

Irina Popova completed her residency at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam in 2012, before that she studied photography in St. Petersburg and Moscow. In her work Irina focuses on conflict regions and controversial issues in society and the private realm. She began her career as a (photo) journalist. Over time she developed as an artist. Photography is still the basis of her (long-term) projects. In addition she uses video, text, sound and installation to tell her story. Her engagement with people in difficult and even extreme circumstances is palpable in the way she spends time with them and records this with a camera. She became more and more aware of the fact that there runs a very thin line between personal involvement of the artist and the private domain of the subject. How to respect this private domain and prevent shooting spectacular images? Such questions are raised in the very personal selection from her photo archive.

In her most recent project Bijlmer: Atlas People and Birds she tells two stories, with photographs, drawn maps, found objects and texts, namely the story of the people – various protagonists and their locations- and the story of the birds - several bird species and their location-. The project will also be presented in book form.
