Used materials often form the basis for the works of Ray Zijlstra. His works deal with layering and connecting which is visible in technique as well as in his subject matter.
Ray’s artworks stem from an exploratory process with an uncertain or unknown outcome.
In his works he reflects upon his own position and, or as, the other in the social context. His curiosity about how reality is shaped and human questions like 'what is temptation?' form another impetus for his work. Many of Ray’s projects are perennial. The layering of his works, at the level of research and work, creates poetry. A beholder can freely interpret the poetry without the directive hand of the artist.
