René Darimin Tosari (SR, 1948)
OPEN ART ROUTE
René Tosari was active in Suriname until 1990. In 1983 he founded the artists' collective Waka Tjopu. He is regarded as one of Suriname's most important graphic artists. In the 1970s and 1980s his work was politically engaged. Social realism as well as his social commitment formed a direct inspiration for his work. Next to this René creates more indirect and symbolic work in which his style is freer, more complex and imaginative. His paintings are characterized by a self-developed technology, a combination of acrylic and oil paint, which he applies wet in several layers. From 1990 tot 2013 he lived and worked in the Netherlands though he was regularly in Suriname. Since 2013 he is living and working in Suriname again.
