Russia | 1984 | Spatial

Lev Kazachenko studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. He has been a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and has participated in numerous projects and exhibitions in the Netherlands, Germany, France and USA. At the age of seven, Lev came from Russia to the Netherlands. According to the artist this resulted for him in a loose sense of motherland. This orphanage pushed the boundaries of Lev in various directions of interest in his art practice. Lev’s projects often draw a parallel between mysticism and a criminal culture as a non-conformist alternative to the mainstream society. Lev gives a following interpretation of being an artist: “What is an artist? It’s an example of a certain condition of the human mind. Not necessarily a good example, but an unusual example. The mind of a person who conceives the world from a different perspective, this perspective can be applied to any given. Therefore an artist is a perceiver rather than the one who is perceived. The work of the artist is to be perceived through the minds of others and may leave interesting traces in those minds.”
