Abu Kanu

Sierra Leone | 1953 | Design, Drawing, Music, Painting, Spatial

In Sierra Leone Abu Kanu is known as an art and advertising painter and designer. Since 1988 he lives and works in the Netherlands and since 1996 in Amsterdam Southeast. In the Netherlands Abu developed his artistic practice further and expanded his practice with teaching West African percussion. His work includes: paintings, pen drawings, textile processing in African style and masks and sculptures of wood. Working with wood started with found pieces of wood. The wood is treated with glue and acrylic paint to give it character and to make it more durable. The decorative masks are sometimes inspired by the traditional masks of different population groups in West Africa, which are still used there at parties and events. Abu likes to be inspired by the beauty of people and landscapes and the cultural richness of Sierra Leone. Abu also organises art and percussion workshops for children and adults.
