Heike Tjepkema makes mixed media art: spatial installations, videos, short films, drawings/paintings. In her work she investigates the relationship between herself and her environment. Recurring themes are: the loss of grip on the world/reality, looking for the other or looking – as a goal in itself. In her short films she reflects on social issues and has the quality to come very close to her characters.
“Everything seems what it is” is her most recent work. This is a visual journey of a life-threatening situation – confrontational but also poetic.
She regularly travels to West Africa for her audiovisual projects/films. Among other things, this has resulted in Videoletters, a project in which children from the Netherlands and Gambia/Senegal provide insight into their own lives, a short film “NOMMO” and a short film “We all are One”.http://www.heiketjepkema.com
