Maria Westra

Nederland | Painting, Spatial

Maria Westra graduated cum laude in 1973 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and won the textile prize. Her specialization was monumental textiles and weaving. She is particularly fascinated by the design of fabrics. Besides small perspex work, she also made larger cubes for halls, like for Kraaijvanger Architects, St. Franciscus Gasthuis. Such a cube consists of a series of perspex sheets in which, as it were, such a fabric is pulled apart and each color is painted on a separate plate. If you walk around it, a constantly changing image is created. She has made perspex wall objects for, among others, Allianz and on behalf of the City of Amsterdam for the Homecare and the Stopera. Nowadays, she works with paint, again starting from the structures of fabric design. With the help of spray bottles she applies the paint on wood or linen and moves the cloth so that the paint flows into each other. Ultimately, she wants to end up with an illusion, a snapshot, something you want to grab onto and have it disappearing at the moment of grabbing it. In addition, she draws and paints. Like 3 years ago, when she did the children’s portraits for Hestia Kinderopvang.
