Martin La Roche studied Visual Arts at the University of Chile and at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. In Santiago he was part of the Santa Victoria’s Studio. Currently Martin is FLAT artist in residence.
In his practice Martin explores the possibility of doing research in non-directional time. According to the Epicurean idea of clinamen atoms always travel parallel in the void. Suddenly one of them swerves and crashes into another atom. ‘No one knows, where, or when, or how’. This collision leads to another and another and so on, giving birth to a world. His multidisciplinary projects take the form of installations, books, the reinterpretation of a 13th century Japanese manual for building gardens, drawings, clouds sighting events, numeric palindromes (like 957837227338759), unfolding collections of objects, etc. Currently he is working as part of the White Elephant Bibliotheke, a collaborative network that was born at the Jan Van Eyck Academie (Maastricht, The Netherlands) that aims to imagine a library for books research and co-writing.http://www.martinfreiherrvonlaroche.com
