1970 |

Mick La Rock (Aileen Esther Middel) started writing her name in graffiti at the age of 13. As a scholar of the traditional ‘New York School’ graffiti style La Rock started out with average graffiti lettering. After mastering this art and working together with NYC’s most prominent graffiti artists she started to look for new challenges. La Rock began to turn letters and their insides spaces around in search for new ways to work with their shapes and functions. In her current work this results in a minimalistic two-dimensional and three-dimensional approach in which she separates and layers the elements of the abstraction of her graffiti name, alienating them from their original essence and composition.

Mick La Rock studied at the Hanzehogeschool Groningen and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy for Fine Arts. In 2013 she painted a commissioned mural at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Currently she works as guest curator at the Amsterdam Museum for the graffiti exhibition New York meets the Dam, in which the Martin Wong collection (City as Canvas) will be put in an Amsterdam perspective. The exhibition will be designed by Floor Wesseling in collaboration with Ilona Laurijsse and will be on view from September 18th 2015 until January 24th 2016. La Rock features in the international graffiti art documentary Bomb It directed by Jon Reiss. Her work has been published in several retrospective graffiti books such as Burning New York by James and Karla Murray, Graffiti Woman by Nicholas Ganz and Graffiti 365 by Jay Adlin.
